Frequently Asked Questions
Active Release Technique (ART)® is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique. It is a non-invasive manual therapy technique that works to correct soft tissue restrictions that cause pain and mobility issues. ART can help a wide variety of conditions including but not limited to:
headaches, neck pain, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, TMJ issues, tennis elbow, and nerve entrapment issues.
Every ART® session is a combination of examination and treatment. The doctor uses her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated similar to massage, except the doctor uses small targeted contact points rather than broad strokes. This technique can feel quite intense as it increases your nervous system's tolerance for stretching the muscle.
Many describe it as a "good pain." The goal is to find the source of pain and in doing so, can be uncomfortable, but should not be unbearable. The doctor and the patient will communicate during the treatment to gauge pain levels and determine a treatment plan.
